Chapter 13

I had never been out of the section of the country known as the water caste. If I'm being specific I'd really never had any reason to leave my small city in the heart of it either. The Mountain of Aura lay in the outskirts of the air caste, not very far from the manor, but the thought of leaving still shook my stomach in unspeakable ways.

The car hit a bump in the road as Apollo took a sharp right and drove onto a small path that led into the dense forest.

"We're here already?"

"I guess the families decided to keep everyone close to the manor, hidden in plain sight."

The car slowed to a halt at the dead-end of the dirt path.

I peered out the window at the dark forest that engulfed us. The brush from the trees was so thick that barely any sunlight had the chance to fight its way through the vegetation. It was dark, and damp, and something ominous hung over it like a cloud of sadness. I reluctantly pulled myself from the car and took a deep breath.

Even the air felt damp and odd.

I pulled the map from my back pocket and sprawled it out on the car's hood. A bright golden dot appeared on it, shimmering and dancing in the dim light.

"I'm assuming that's us." I laid my finger on it. "Which means we have all this way to go." I traced my fingertip over the parchment, dragging it all the way to the mountain.

That looks like a lot of work.

The truth was, I was exhausted. Being arrested and almost killed drains a girl! The back of my mind was cluttered with thoughts of sleep, and hot baths.

Those were the only things pushing me to keep going. The faster we freed Atlas, the faster I could be back to the manor.

I needed time to rest, recoup and figure out how the hell I was going to get Jade out of the grasp of Asher. Now that I knew where she was, a new fear. Was she even alive?

I shivered at the thought, remorseful for even considering a possible reality where she was dead.

"If we move now we could be back by nightfall." Apollo pulled a huge pack onto his back.

The sound of water sloshing came from it.

"Is that all water?" I asked.

I had heard of water packs like that, but only for extreme hikers and runners.

"Yeah, I have a feeling that my pouch isn't going to cut it. You never know what you're going to find in this forest. Stay close to me."

Apollo walked off and I trailed closely behind. For a split second his statement sounded more like the plea of a concerned friend, rather than the command of a hardheaded frenemy, but I shook it from my head. I was probably making up things that weren't there.

Apollo had made his feelings for me pretty clear— there were none. There was nothing there, there couldn't possibly be.

My mind traveled back to Trent at the coffee house, the gorgeous barista who had humiliated me in front of his girlfriend.
